May 5th | Went to see “Cyclings” sports at the Crystal Palace. Excellent racing. Kramer was extra good. Benyon was only second class to Kramer and Ellegard. Fine track saw the sights of the place. |
Went to Leigh on Sea for five days, Southend, and around about. |
July | Took a house at
Saw the sights in London; British Museum, National Art Gallery, United Service Museum. Kensington Museums. Saw the Rocket there also the Puffing Billy. Watt’s old pumping engines, and several old engines. The Rocket when first built was 9 HP but an alteration increased the power to 16 HP when it averaged 52miles per hour over a four mile course. The inventor of the idea of using steam ^locomotive engines to draw loads on smooth rails was Mr Hedley of Wylam on Tyne, my own birthplace, and he had the Puffing Billy built to his own ideas. George Stephenson also lived at Wylam in Street House. |
