A Fair Maiden

Some of these lines
taken from Tennyson’s
birthday book
Dedicated to Marie
1st Sept 02

An open hearted maiden true and fair.
Her heart is pure as snow.
Her love in higher loves endure
And is of sovereign nature, that I know.
With such a fervent flame of human love
Never maiden glowed before.
Her heart is like the well contented dove.
And will cling to me for evermore

Low is her voice but ? mysterious way
To my heart so cold,
Which to a louder one is closed and, may
To none other be unfurl’d
Never yet had heaven appeared so blue,
My blood danced in me,
When I learned this love so strange and new,
Which in her eyes I see.

Untouched by any shade of years
May those kind eyes for ever dwell,
And may they ne’er be wet with tears
Of sorrow, than to none can tell;
For I will soon be home again,
To take thee in my arms for aye.
And never will thy heart have pain;
And ne’er will thou have cause to sigh.
